What goes on a rent receipt

A rent receipt shows the date it was paid, the amount, the rental and the period the rent covers, and who took it. New York's law, one of the most specific, lists those four things [1]. This one adds the amount in words, how it was paid and, if you add the rent due, what's still owed, like a slip from a paper receipt book.

When a receipt is required

Rules differ by state. In New York, a landlord has to give a written receipt for rent paid in cash, money order or anything other than the tenant's personal check; for a personal check when the tenant asks in writing; right away when rent is paid in person, and within 15 days when it's sent; and has to keep records of cash rent receipts for at least three years [1]. Check your own state's landlord-tenant law. Even where it isn't required, a receipt settles "did I pay March?" in seconds.
